Muslim League’s February 1940 Resolution a Fake? – Critiquing “The Murder of History” – Episode 4

Back after a long break. In this episode we will have a look at Dr. Aziz’s claim in ‘The Murder of History’ (p. 61 in Sang-e-Meel Publications; p. 51 in Vanguard) that “the Muslim League’s reported decision in favor of a partition of India taken in February 1940 is not to be found in the official text of the resolutions of the party published by its office”. See image below:

The resolution, in fact, is well documented and Jinnah himself shared it with the Viceroy Lord Linlithgow. See below for his letter to Linlithgow enclosing part of the resolution (dated 6th February 1940). This is from Jinnah Papers volume 15 (page 124) and the original file and page number from Quaid-i-Azam Papers (at National Archives, Islamabad) is also mentioned.

.

Linlithow replied the same day acknowledging the resolution.

Now that we know hat the resolution exists, we turn to its text. Note below the original QAP file number and pages. In Jinnah Papers this is volume 15 page 127.

We go to the relevant section that is para 14 point part III.

And there we have it. Partition of India into separate dominions constituting of zones where majority of Muslims live in direct relationship with Great Britain. This part can be found on page 131 of volume 15 of Jinnah Papers. Next page shows that it was published under Liaquat Ali Khan’s name.

Why did Dr. Aziz choose to outright deny its existence? As we discussed in previous episodes his ideology when he wrote this book was dictated by his attitude towards Pakistani state. Bitter over how he was treated, Aziz chose this medium of distorting history as a way to settle scores with the government. He had however in the past written ‘Making of Pakistan’ in the 60s which passionately argued for Pakistan. He could not disown his book so he dallied with theories that Jinnah and League did not want Partition of India (an orthodox opinion now due to the effort of Cambridge school). Best way to do it without rubbishing his own book was to produce seeds of doubt like these. What better revenge than to say that founders of Pakistan did not even want to create it? In ‘Murder of History’ he mentions Cambridge School too very briefly and not directly.

Happy reading!

  1. Mr. Meraj i think reading & comprehending are two different things & u couldn’t do the latter. The idea of Federation doesn’t mount to Partition (plz read US Civil war history & a recent turmoil among Canadian Federation (Quebec) where court turned down secession from State) Iqbal in his last address too gave this very idea of Federation & NOT partition where Iqbal said …that such a Muslim Federation will block all invaders to India (bcz most invasions happened via Afghan route) …Similar case is with Chechen Federation of Russia

    1. Its clearly written that ‘various units in each zone shall form component parts of the federation in that zone”. The federation is not with Hindu India but they are talking about a separate one directly linked to Great Britain. Hindu India was already directly linked with Britain. Take your rude comment elsewhere. Imbecile.
